The African drought of 1984-1985 shows clearly in this Multi-spectral Drought Index image from August 1984. Dark reddish-brown areas indicate unhealthy vegetation relative to a normal year. The drought withered crops from the Sahel (along the southern border of the Sahara desert) to East Africa and hit Ethiopia, Sudan, and Somalia especially hard. Roughly 800,000 people died during the resulting famine.
