| | May 20, 2005 NASA, OTHERS ADVANCE UNDERSTANDING OF HELIOPHYSICS AT CONFERENCE As a precursor to the International Heliophysical Year (IHY) of 2007, NASA scientists and others, will host three special sessions next week on the physics of the extended solar-geo-planetary system at the Spring 2005 Joint Assembly meeting at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, La. The term “heliophysical” goes beyond the study of Earth embracing other planets, interplanetary space and the Sun. The 2007 IHY activities, on the 50th anniversary of the International Geophysical Year (IGY), will build on the success of the IGY by continuing the legacy of cross-disciplinary studies beyond Earth. Importantly, IHY activities will help improve understanding of the processes that affect interplanetary and planetary environments and they will contribute to safer human space travel to the Moon and other planets. ”The IHY will also be an international effort highly relevant to the International Living with a Star (ILWS) program,” said Nat Gopalswamy, International Coordinator for IHY 2007 and an astrophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. Special Session One: What: Comparative Studies of Planetary Thermospheres and Their Dynamics Using General Circulation Models When: Tues., May 24 at 4:30 EST Where: Morial Convention Center, Room 225 Special Session Two: What: The Response of Planetary Ionospheres to Solar Irradiance I When: Wed., May 25 at 9:30 a.m. EST Where: Morial Convention Center, Room 225 Special Session Three: What: Universal Physical Processes in the Solar System I Posters When: Fri., May 27 at 9:30 EST Where: Morial Convention Center, Hall B To arrange media interviews with session presenters, contact Rob Gutro or Gretchen Cook-Anderson at the AGU pressroom at 504/670-7020 between May 23-27.
